This May we raised £600.03 to support the distribution of 1,935 solar lights which promise to improve the livelihoods of some of the world’s poorest families. SolarAid work in the hardest to reach areas of Africa where infrastructure is poor and poverty is rife. Without electricity families have no clean source of light, leaving millions to rely on expensive and dangerous alternatives. Solar Aid empowers the people of these communities with the choice to buy an affordable solar light. The money raised from each lamp stays in the local community and encourages job creation. 1,935 solar lights will bring access to clean, safe light to 8,417 people. These lights will save families an estimated £288,716 on lighting alternatives such as kerosene and avert around 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. They will enable children to study for over a million and a half extra hours, mean improved health for an estimated 4,000 people.
