This month, we’re partnering with Engera to strengthen nutrition, healthcare and long-term resilience in Southern Ethiopia.

Together, our community raised £4,159.96 to support this project, including an additional £1,000 grant from the Eleanor Rathbone Trust, helping it go even further.

In Galeya Rogdha, a remote village in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, families face daily challenges. Accessible only by unpaved roads, the village has limited access to essential services, and many households experience poverty and food insecurity. In 2024, more than 270,000 children across Oromia suffered from severe acute malnutrition.

Our May grant will help establish three new community gardens to support a school feeding programme, providing seeds, tools, irrigation equipment and hands-on training in sustainable farming and crop diversification.

Parents, teachers and students will cultivate the gardens together, making gardening part of everyday school life. Any surplus produce will be sold locally, generating additional income and benefiting the wider community.

Through the power of collective giving, this project is expected to improve nutrition for around 2,000 people, supporting healthier families, stronger school attendance and greater long-term food security.

Engera is a grassroots charity working in Southern Ethiopia to provide primary healthcare, and prevent diseases, primarily focusing on women and children. They believe that good health and quality healthcare are the foundation for a prosperous society by empowering local communities to bring about positive change.
