The Democratic Republic of Congo has struggled with high infant and maternal mortality rates for too long. Until 2023, no accredited midwifery training existed, making giving birth increasingly risky for both baby and mum. But things are looking up! We're working with WONDER, a new partner that's all about empowering women and girls, to train 20 nurses from three maternal clinic settings to become midwifery trainers and leaders

Offering professional development for female nurses empowers them and also sets a precedent for women's roles in healthcare and leadership. This means more skilled professionals on the ground, ready to make a difference strengthening the maternal healthcare system generations to come.

Once trained, each new professionals will teach 50 midwives a year. In a country where one midwife typically delivers 40-50 babies a month, this project could reach tens of thousands of mothers and infants every single year, both in clinics and out in the community.

WONDER empowers women and girls through quality education and access to good work so that they can exit poverty for good. Established in 2012, they work with women-led local NGOs in 23 countries across Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe towards a future where women and girls can make informed life choices and lead the way in their own personal development.

WONDER’s approach is based on six pillars that guide our work with our partners: 1. quality education 2. accompaniment and mentoring 3. investing in local women-led partners 4. empowering spaces 5. sustainable employment and 6. family engagement.

Over the last 11 years, they have empowered over 125,000 women and girls with 36 local women led partners in 23 different countries around the world.
