The stunning Amboseli National Park is home to some of Kenya’s world-renowned wildlife as well as communities from the Maasai, a traditionally nomadic tribe. The Maasai are a polygamous society where large families are celebrated and education levels are low, particularly for women. The men in this community are untrusting of contraception and it is very difficult and can be dangerous for a woman to access without spousal permission leaving women with no choice but to accept the repetitive burden of bearing children from a very young age. A cycle which is detrimental to their health and happiness. A recent survey found that almost half of 200 women in the project area didn’t want any more children. CHASE Africa believe in giving women a choice and have been working in this area to bring in vital health services and educate opinion leaders on family planning options. Our December grant will reach over 15,000 people through a programme which includes access to HIV testing, cancer screening and contraception as well as ‘dialogue days' and their work with men and boys to dispel myths and misconceptions.
