The specific objective of this project is to increase nutrition and household income for farmers through the development of an irrigation scheme covering 40 hectares of land which enable efficient and effective crop production directly benefitting approximately 1,925 people.
The support given by Be One Percent will contribute to the continuation of irrigation work in Thyolo directly benefiting 300-400 households. Irrigation will enable cultivation of land to different crops like maize, vegetables and Irish potatoes. These are used for both household consumption and sale. The income generated can then be invested elsewhere such as tuition fees, livestock or small businesses. Effective irrigation allows farmers to harvest several times per year meaning greater yields across the year. This can dramatically reduce risk of malnutrition for the farmers and their communities.
